Part 1: The Truth About Hemp Extract (with a recipe!)

For many months now, we have been in conversations with many of you who have raved about hemp extract and the benefits of CBD. While we initially hesitated to offer it in the store, the more we have learned, it feels good to offer it to you. There is so much misinformation out there, that we hope to clarify a few details here + share some helpful resources for you to learn more. And of course, please don't hesitate to ask us if you have any questions!

Thank you,
Elio & Your VG Family

yes, it looks like its cousin, but hemp is NOT the same as marijuana...!

yes, it looks like its cousin, but hemp is NOT the same as marijuana...!

Clarification #1: Hemp Leaves are NOT the same plant as marijuana, and CBD will not get you "high".

Hemp and Marijuana are in the same family, but their properties are entirely different. (like cousins who might have similar features but who act VERY different from each other!)

It's the THC in marijuana that creates the sensation of being high, but THC is present in hemp only a tiny fraction of 1%, and it cannot get you high.

Instead you'll find CBD (Cannabidiol), which is "one of the 150+ naturally occurring phytocannabinoids found in certain strains of hemp and in all cannabis plant strains," according to the Wikipedia article about CBD.

And it's the CBD and other phytocannabinoids which offer a medicinal effect so potent that it's being used to manage diabetes, PTSD, anxiety, seizures and epilepsy, and nearly everything you can imagine. (Even infertility + athletic performance due to the faster post-workout recovery times!)

hemp seeds, lotion, oil, plant, extract... so many truly different options from the same plant

hemp seeds, lotion, oil, plant, extract... so many truly different options from the same plant

Clarification #2: Hemp seed oil and hemp extract are quite different!

Hemp is truly an amazing plant (it even was used as part of the clean-up in Chernobyl, the world's worst nuclear disaster to date!), and it can make many different products.

But not all are equal.

Hemp seed OIL (on the surface) looks and sounds a lot like hemp extract, but their properties are quite different.

Hemp seed oil is made from only the seeds, whereas hemp extract is made from the entire plant. While hemp seed oil is high in omega fatty acids, it includes almost no (or zero!) therapeutic CBD.

Why We LOVE Havaianas!

Havaianas are NOT just any ole flip flop!

  • The soles are a bit squishy (like memory foam) and this makes them more comfortable.
  • The way they’re made is unique enough that the shape is patented!
  • They last for years - these are NOT “throw aways” after a season!
  • It’s because of the type of rubber they’re made of, if you’re curious :-)
  • They come in lots of great colors and options

FUN Fact: “Havaianas” is the Portuguese word for “Hawaiians”.

PSST… until June 25, find them 25% off for members of our (free!) e-Club! <3 (If you’ve not yet joined, find details right here.)

* make sure to have a few layers
* take time to ENJOY it!!

Wellness Essentials for the respiratory system

This past week, one of our team members was out with an awful cough. And where did she go to help feel better? Right back to Vineyard Grocer! ha! Funny but true! Mark and other team members stepped up to share ideas on what could be a help. We're sharing these with you!

#1 // Goldenseal, by Herb Pharm

Get it? Herb PHARM?! We even like their name. :-) In some cases, you might like to go to a pharmacy to get well... but you might also like to reach for plant-based support. And this is the gold behind the goldenseal. Certified organic, this can help big time when your respiratory system has taken a hard hit.

Goldenseal is known to be helpful with infections, skin issues, digestive challenges, and all things respiratory. It's often paired with echinacea, myrrh, and other immune boosters.

If you were going to have ONE herb in your wellness arsenal, this could be the one!

#2 // Honey Lemon Throat Comfort, by Yogi Tea

We just love all things Yogi Tea. (Come check out our selection! While we don't have EVERY flavor they offer, we do have a lot of 'em!) This particular mix is incredibly soothing and immune boosting, with a mix of honeybush, lemongrass, licorice root, echinacea, peppermint, wild cherry bark, black pepper, slippery elm bark, and stevia leaf.

It really DOES make a difference!

#3 // Raw Neem Honey, by Heavenly Organics

Honey can be incredibly helpful - but it has to be good honey like the ones by Heavenly Organics. This one is collected by bees in an area with no pesticides within such a big radius that it can be certified organic. (That's actually a pretty big deal as honey goes because it's not just the neem trees or flowers that must be organic... it's everything in the area!!)

So GOOD honey (like this one!) can be your saving grace - it can help strengthen your immune system but is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, AND anti-bacterial (an antibiotic made by nature!).

#4 // TEN Spring Water

Water is cleansing us, helping filter, hydrating, nourishing. It couldn't be more important.

We love carrying TEN Spring Water because it isn't tap water filtered to bottle it... NOPE. It's pure spring water with added electrolytes, making it a "perfect 10" and super alkaline. We have a water filter at home, but when I have reason to pick up a bottle of water THIS is the one! :-)

We hope this is helpful to a friend out there. If you're feeling under the weather or just want to take good care of yourself, you might also like to check out some of these posts:

{recipe + deals!} Crazy Easy Ranch Dressing

Recipe by Éva Raposa

In honor of this week's crazy special offering on Tierra Farm Organics products, we have a recipe to share on how you can make a NUT-based creamy ranch dressing. It's so good too!!

Crazy Easy "Better Than" Ranch Dressing

* 2 cups cashews, optionally soaked in 1 1/2 cups water for 2-24 hours in the fridge, then drained
* 3/4 cup water
* 1/2 cup ice
* 1/2 tsp sea salt
* 5 cloves garlic, peeled
* 3/8 cup apple cider vinegar (ACV)
* 1/2 cup finely chopped dill

Drain the cashews, then blend all ingredients except the dill. Pour mix into a bowl, then hand mix the chopped dill. VOILA!

    • This stores well for 3-4 days in an airtight container in the fridge.
    • Just like ANY ranch dressing, dipping veggies in this is fabulous, but it’s also great on top of a salad and can even work in place of mayonnaise or the like on a sandwich. (YUM!)
    • If you aren’t too keen on cashews, you could easily substitute sunflower seeds, walnuts, or almonds for a slightly different appearance and taste.
    • If you like to have fresh lemon juice on hand, you could lower the ACV by doing half lemon juice and half ACV. Just an option if you want to add a small extra step that is quite good!

    This week, save on ALL Tierra Farms products! You'll find the nuts, seeds, dates, prunes, ETC. right at our front door.

    EVERYONE saves 20%, but if you happen to also be in our (free!) E-Club, you'll save even more...! <<Click here for details if you're not already a member.>>
